Join us for a screening followed by an open dialogue session with administrators, educators, and community members. Together, let's reflect on the progress made, acknowledge the challenges faced, and explore the road ahead for NES schools.

In August 2023, KPRC 2 embarked on a project to chronicle a year inside Fleming Middle School on the northeast side of Houston. Fleming Middle School students traditionally transition to Phillis Wheatly, a historically underperforming high school. Wheatley was at the epicenter of the issues that eventually led to the Texas Education Agency’s decision to take over the state’s largest school district and reorganize Houston ISD. KPRC 2 Anchor Candace Burns has spent the school year documenting the changes under Superintendent Mike Miles and the New Education System (NES), telling stories from the perspective of students, staff and families who make up Fleming and the surrounding community. Our exclusive access to the Fleming campus and classroom environment has provided us the opportunity to more deeply explain changes to curriculum, teacher and principal evaluations, test scores, and so much more. Now, as we reach the end of this first year in NES, our vision is to create a space for the Houston ISD community to review the impact of the reforms and host an open dialogue with administrators about what comes next for NES schools.
